Morocco has become one of the world’s best surf destinations. Just a short-haul flight from most of Europe, the Atlantic coast north of Agadir serves up consistent swells and a variety of breaks.
Whether you’re a first-time surfer or an intermediate chasing your first proper barrel, this guide will walk you through exactly what to look for in a surf camp, so you can book with confidence.
1. Location: Are you close to the right waves?
Morocco’s surf country runs along a 100km stretch of Atlantic coastline between Essaouira and Agadir; within that area, a few names come up again and again.
Taghazout is number one, a former fishing village perched on a rocky headland that has turned into one of Africa’s most celebrated surf towns. The surrounding breaks cater to every level, from the long right-handers of Anchor Point and Killer Point for advanced surfers to the peaks of Boilers and Hash Point for intermediates and the mellower beach breaks at Anza and Tamraght for beginners.
Tamraght, just a few kilometres south, is quieter and increasingly popular with families and beginners. Further afield, Imsouane offers a famously long, gentle right-hander. Sidi Kaouki, near Essaouira, has a wilder, more remote feel.
When evaluating any camp, look at how close it actually sits to the surf. Our Taghazout Villa sits on the headland just north of the village and within walking distance of multiple breaks. Anchor Point, Boilers and Hash Point are all on your doorstep.
2. Your surf level: does the camp truly cater to it?
This is arguably the most important question, as your level changes what you require from a surf camp.
If you’re a complete beginner, you need patient instruction on gentle, forgiving beach breaks, small group sizes and coaches who understand how to build confidence.
Intermediate surfers benefit most from guided surf safaris with knowledgeable local coaches who can read swell conditions and take you to the right break at the right time.
Advanced surfers often need less instruction and more access: reliable point break conditions, optional coaching sessions and perhaps the freedom to plan their own days.
At DFrost Almugar, we structure our packages around this logic: surf coaching is built for those who want daily instruction, surf & stay is suited to those with existing skills, and surf & yoga is perfect for those who want balance.
3. What’s actually included at a surf camp?
Morocco’s surf camps cover a wide price spectrum. A lower-priced camp might quote accommodation only, with surfing, board hire, airport transfers, and meals all charged separately, and those extras add up fast.
Before booking, get clarity on exactly what’s included. Key questions to ask:
- Does the package include board and wetsuit hire?
- How many surf sessions are included?
- Is airport transfer from Agadir included?
- What meals are provided?
At DFrost Almugar, we generally include most key surf camp essentials, depending on the package you choose.
With packages that include surf coaching sessions, meals, airport transfers from Agadir and optional or included board and wetsuit hire. You’re all set to go.
4. Surf coaching quality and safety
The best surf camps invest in permanent, highly experienced coaches who know the local breaks intimately and can tailor instruction to individual needs.
Things to look for when assessing a camp’s coaching quality:
- Instructor certification: look for ISA (International Surfing Association) or WSL-recognised credentials.
- Group sizes: smaller groups mean more water time, better feedback and faster improvement.
- Local knowledge: experienced local guides who know exactly which break to head to on any given day, based on swell direction, wind and tide.
- Safety protocols: water safety briefings, knowledge of rips and hazards at each break, and first aid training should be standard.
We’ve been operating in Taghazout since 2008; that’s 15+ years of accumulated local knowledge. Our team has an in-depth understanding of the area’s breaks, conditions and seasonal variations.
5. Accommodation: where to stay?
Proper rest and recovery between sessions is a genuine factor in how quickly you progress and how much you enjoy your trip.
Think about what you actually need. Are you happy in a shared dorm room to save money and meet people, or do you want a private room with an ensuite? Do you need somewhere quiet to wind down in the evening, or are you looking for a social buzz? Is there space to stretch out, a pool, a rooftop terrace, or comfortable common areas?
We operate across multiple properties to suit different preferences and budgets: the Taghazout Surf & Yoga Villa on the headland, the Seaside Boutique Hotel in the village, Villa Surya, a quieter yoga-focused retreat near Paradis Plage.
6. When to visit Morocco?
Morocco’s surf season around Taghazout runs from October through to mid April.
October and November are when the first winter swells arrive, the summer crowds have thinned, the water is still relatively warm and the wind is light.Â
December to February brings bigger, more powerful surf and cooler air temperatures.
If you’re visiting in the summer months, some camps reorient their offering around yoga, wellness and cultural exploration, which can make for a perfectly enjoyable trip at lower prices and with fewer surfers around.
Whatever time of year you visit, Morocco’s weather is mild by European standards. Even in winter, air temperatures around Taghazout rarely drop below 18°C during the day. A 3/2mm wetsuit handles the water temperature comfortably for most of the season.
We’re open year-round, with season-specific packages, including a popular summer surf & yoga offering that makes the most of calmer conditions and longer evenings.
7. Reputation and track record
A camp’s reputation is one of the most reliable signals of quality. How long have they been operating? What do independent reviews on Google and TripAdvisor say?
DFrost Almugar has been running since 2008 with consistently strong reviews across Google, Facebook and TripAdvisor.
We’ve also been ranked the #1 surf camp in Morocco for 2026 by Surf Atlas, one of the most respected independent surf travel guides online.
